Paul W. Stewart

The story begins with Paul W. Stewart's (founder of the Black American West Museum) extraordinary search and discovery of a past not recorded in conventional history books or portrayed in pop culture. His search for the "true colors" of the West has taken him to nearly every corner of the West, gathering personal artifacts, memorabilia, newspapers, legal documents, clothing, letters, photographs, and oral histories.

Click here to see Mr. Stewart receive honors at the Museum during our recent booksigning event for African Americans of Denver and to read more about the man who started our Museum courtesy of GlapionArts.

Dearfield News!

Recently, the Black American West Museum has acquired a major stake of the pioneer Black colony of Dearfield. Here is an interesting article describing the current status of Dearfield provided by the February Issue of the Denver Urban Spectrum. You can also read more about the founder of Dearfield, O.T. Jackson, on our Founders page.

Further, the Rocky Mountain News printed on Saturday, July 5th, a great article by Mary Voelz Chandler that follows up on our progress with Dearfield. The article is chock full of great information and photographs so please give it a read. Also, please note an accompanying story which is also part of the Dearfield story which talks about the last living former Dearfield residents, brothers Albert and Walker Groves.

New Museum Publication!

The Black American West Museum proudly announces the publication of its newest book, African Americans of Denver, to celebrate Denver's 150th anniversary and the westward migration of African Americans. Authors Ronald Stephens, Ph D., and La Wanna M. Larson have drawn the images and history in this collection from the Black American West Museum, the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library and various private collections.

Urban Spectrum Article about our Executive Director

Here is an interesting article about our Executive Director, La Wanna Larson (pictured here with Mayor Hickenlooper, who is a strong supporter of the Museum). It details her struggles with the museum and her personal life in the Urban Spectrum, a popular Denver newspaper that deals with people of color.
